Where does the list come from?

We meet with new arrival refugee families once they've been placed into housing. It's typical for large families of 6 or more to live in completely empty apartments. Often without beds, light bulbs, or essential childcare items like diapers. We meet with families in their homes, first collecting names, genders, ages, clothes sizes and shoe sizes for each family member. Then we create a list of their needs using a visual catalog to guide us. Each page of the catalog represents a room in the house, and family members point to the things they want and we record it into a list. That's where you come in!

Amazon Wishlists

Our volunteer listmakers turn the lists into Amazon wishlists. If you're not familiar with Amazon wishlists, it's similar to a wedding or baby registry. People can shop the list like a regular registry and send items directly to the family.

Listmaker Job

  • Find all the family's needed items on Amazon Prime and add it to a public wishlist.
  • Prioritize the most important/urgent needs by keeping them at the top of the list.
  • Maintain the list by periodically checking in to make sure the items are still in stock, as Amazon Prime items can change quickly.
  • Share the list with your network and encourage your people to help the family out.

High Priority Items

Amazon wishlist items can be prioritized as low, medium or high priority. Also, you can put high priority items at the top of the list.  High priority items include: Beds, sheets, blankets, diapers, formula, wipes, light bulbs, shoes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, jackets, first aid kits, children's school supplies, and phones. There may be high priority items on your list not mentioned here, please use your best judgement.

Practical guidelines

We are learning as we go so this is by no means comprehensive but please keep in mind:

  • Family addresses are 100% private and should not be shared or accessed by anyone other than the approved listmaker.
  • Please try to list Amazon Prime items when possible to ensure quick delivery.
  • Make sure your list is set to public, does not allow third-party sellers, and "don't spoil my surprises" is unchecked.
  • Liquid laundry detergent: They mostly hand wash clothes because machines are coin operated and expensive. Powder or tablets doesn't work for this so list liquid detergent only!
  • Shoes sizes may need to be converted to US from EU sizes used in Syria.
  • Add multiple quantities of consumable or disposable supplies like toilet paper, shampoo, toothbrushes.
  • They need everything, so if you notice something crucial is missing, go ahead and add it!
