Friendsgiving with Miry's List

This November, add an element of giving back to your holiday gatherings.

In 2017, over 50,000 refugees will be resettled in the U.S. Mostly families with young kids, they leave behind family, friends, and virtually everything they own to find safety and a brighter future.

Miry's List is a nonprofit organization that provides a mechanism for people to directly help New Arrival families from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq with the things, people, and services they need to thrive in their new lives in America.

This month, we're empowering the Miry's List community around the world to support our next 100 New Arrival families by gathering with friends, sharing a meal, and raising money to support these new members of our community.

Use this site to create a team, set a goal, and host a holiday meal with your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors. Cook, have it catered, or do it potluck-style. Each guest makes a contribution to Miry’s List in whatever amount they can.

100% of your Friendsgiving with Miry's List donations will provide life-changing programming and services to New Arrival families resettling in America.

Our goal is to raise $75,000 this month for our next 100 families. Whether we're successful or not, these families WILL arrive before the end of 2017. Join us to ensure that each of these families get the warm, loving welcome to America that they deserve.

Uplift Our Neighbor: Crossfit for Haroon

Miry's List and Nela Athletics are throwing a benefit for our new neighbor, Haroon of Aghanistan!

- we'll work out
- we'll eat, drink, and sing
- we'll bid on Silent Auction items
- we'll support Haroon and the mission of Miry’s List to welcome or newest neighbors

About Haroon:

On August 22, 2017, Haroon Salhadost's plane landed at LAX from Kabul, Afghanistan. He moved in with Danny and Ann Marie Richter, a local Eagle Rock family, who were eager to welcome him to American and help make his transition easier and more kind. Haroon moved into their guest house.

Maybe it was the jetlag, the adrenaline of begining resettlement, or the excitement of the unknown, but Haroon showed up the next morning to Crossfit Eagle Rock for an 8:30am class together with Danny. Since then, Haroon has become a regular!

Haroon just moved into permanent housing, a studio apartment in Northridge. We'd like to help him cover the first couple months of rent as he is still seeking employment. Funds we raise will help Haroon get on his feet in his new life in LA.

Workout details:
“August 23rd ”
6 rounds for time:
5 pull-ups (or ring-rows)
5 hand stand push-ups (or push-ups)
25 sit-ups (or Russian twists)

Thank you to our partners Nela CrossFit Eagle Rock for demonstrating so epically what's possible when we welcome our newest neighbors.

WHY:

A little story, from Michelle Franke of PEN Center USA, it'll make your heart feel good...

A few weekends ago, I was reading a 2015 piece in The Atlantic, "The Diaper Dilemma". Reporter Olga Kazan writes:

"Infants use about 240 diapers per month. A year’s supply of diapers costs $936. That means a single mother mother working full time at the minimum wage can expect to spend 6 percent of her annual pay on Pampers alone. Meanwhile, the two biggest programs that assist low-income mothers, SNAP (food stamps) and WIC, don’t cover diapers or baby wipes. That might be why, in a study of 877 pregnant and parenting women published in Pediatrics in 2013, a team of researchers found that needing diapers and not being able to buy them was a leading cause of mental health problems among new moms.

For the study, Megan Smith, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, approached women in New Haven, Connecticut, and asked them one simple question:

“If you have children in diapers, do you ever feel that you do not have enough diapers to change them as often as you would like?”

Almost 30 percent of the women responded “yes”—they often lacked sufficient diapers. Their explanations of what they did to “stretch” the diapers reflect the harrowing reasons why so many new moms feel depressed and anxious. Mothers would take the diapers off, dump out the poop, and put the diapers back on. They would air-dry the diapers. They’d let their kids sit in wet diapers for longer than they should—a practice that can lead to UTIs and other infections. Other moms have reported potty training infants who are less than a year old—at least six months earlier than is recommended—in order to save money."

Here's the full piece. Please read it.

As a new mom, I have been thinking a lot about diaper donation. Our son is 6 months old and sizing out of diapers quickly. Once he does, we're left with loose diapers - sometimes a few, sometimes a lot. We often wonder - what's the most direct way to donate these diapers to families who need them? I posed this exact question to my Facebook community, saying I wanted to get involved, wanted to learn more about diaper donation, and that I'd be willing to coordinate a diaper drive.

A friend popped on the chain and offered to intro me to someone from Miry's List. Do you know about Miry's list? They help refugee families from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and more, create new lives in the US after fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries. Read about their work here: https://www.miryslist.org/about-us/. Amazing what citizens can do together, right?

Waiting to hear back, I thought maybe Miry's List families would want our diapers. Next question was - Where would this diaper drive take place? Most of my professional contacts in LA are literary ones, as I'm the Executive Director of PEN Center USA, a literary arts nonprofit based in LA.Diapers and books might seen unrelated, but I think there's an important connection between them.

See, I love books. I have since I was a girl. I love words and writing and writers. I believe these things are endlessly powerful, that they create strong, empathetic people and communities. Book love can't be experienced if basic needs aren't met though. It's hard for a baby who is uncomfortable and a parent who doesn't feel confident to sit down and read together.

So I asked Skylight Books if they would host a Diaper Drive and Book Party featuring local authors reading their favorite children's books... and they said yes!

Diapers and books. A perfect fit!

And you know who emailed me the day after I talked to Skylight Books? Miry herself! Turns out Miry's families do need our diapers - 95% of families the org serves have children in diapers and 11 babies are on the way! That's a lot of diapers, folks. But I believe in us.

So here we go - "BOOTY BOOK BABY: A Community Diaper Drive & Book Party Benefiting Miry’s List Families" is happening from August 20-27th at Skylight Books. On the 27th the drive will conclude with a Book Party from 12-2 PM.

And if you have any questions or if you want to volunteer at the Book Party on August 27th - email michelle@penusa.org. And if you're an org that might need diapers in the future - email me at michelle@penusa.org

Ana Huna — Fundraiser for Miry's List

We are very excited to launch our first ever Miry’s List Fundraising event, Ana Huna, Sunday, 6/18 from 5-8pm.

Ana Huna means “I’m Here” in Arabic. Whether it’s something we say to our new arrival families to let them know we’re there for them, or something the new arrival families can say confidently when they enter this country as they seek refuge, we feel this is the perfect statement that sums up what Miry’s List is all about. The event will be held at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock and will include food, music and a panel of speakers, all from our new arrival families.

Althought we're still waiting for our 501c3 tax exempt status, we have partnered with Tiyya foundation as our fiscal sponsor for this event. This means any items/donations (over $250) will be eligible for tax deduction!

Funds raised by this event will enable us to continue serve our new arrival families, while we await 501c3 status. If you, or anyone you know, would like to donate goods or services for our silent auction, please contact Renee Brown at renee@miryslist.org.

Tickets are on sale right now at miryslist.org/anahuna And for all of you who are celebrating Ramadan, Ramadan mubarak!

Thank you so much for your generosity and continued support of Miry's List! We can’t wait to see you all there!

New Arrival Supper Club presents: Syrian Family Lunch in Atwater Village

You asked, we listened! New Arrival Supper Club is hosting our 1st family friendly event.

This 3rd installment in the New Arrival series features the traditional foods of Homs, Syria. We are bringing back our chefs from our debut Valentines dinner but this time they're preparing an extravagant family lunch!

This mom and dad moved to Los Angeles with their twin 6 year old daughters and their now 18 month old baby, in June 2016. They fled Homs, Syria in 2012 after their family home was destroyed and spent four years in Jordan before being awarded resettlement in the US.

They are talented cooks and they'll be offering delicious lunch fare in a family friendly environment.

Lunch will be 11am-1pm on Sunday April 2nd in a private residence in Atwater Village. We will have fun lawn games to keep the kids entertained and an amazing Israeli DJ playing middle eastern tunes for a fun afternoon in the sun.

Your support of New Arrival Supper Club gives Najwa and her family the ability to share this most wonderful part of Syrian culture with you while giving them a meaningful and fun way to earn money.

We are offering kids aged 2-12 tickets at $25 and adult tickets in three levels: EAT, GIVE and LOVE.

EAT ($50) gets you delicious food, coffee and tea made by our family! A portion of the ticket price goes towards the cost of supplies and food for the event, and 10% to Miry's List (www.miryslist.org). Everything else goes to the family.

GIVE ($75) gets you all the delicious food mentioned above, plus you'll be donating an additional $25 directly to our family.

LOVE ($100) will get you the delicious food, plus you'll be donating an additional $50 directly to our family.

Tickets are on sale now at brown paper tickets

A big thank you to Sir Michaels Rentals of Eagle Rock for providing us the rentals for this event. Wonderful locally owned business.
